A young mid-19th-century Norwegian woman packing to move to America fills a food barrel for the long voyage across the North Atlantic and also a trunk for clothes and keepsakes. But the narrator's most prized keepsake takes up no room at all: the songs she sings with her mother and sister as she prepares to leave them, probably forever.
